Model history:
Derived from Mitsubishi's Sigma/Diamante platform, the car inherited their transverse-mounted 3-liter, 24-valve V6 engines and front-wheel-drive configuration. The GTO featured both naturally aspirated and twin-turbocharged engine options, along with cutting-edge features such as active aerodynamics (with automatically adjusting front and rear spoilers), four-wheel steering, full-time all-wheel drive, and adaptive suspension. Additionally, Mitsubishi introduced a retractable hardtop variant, known as the GT Spyder or VR4 Spyder, which was engineered and converted from coupe models in California by ASC. These models marked the reemergence of fully automated retractable hardtops since the iconic 1959 Ford Skyliner.
